History
Â
Sixty-two 60ft three coach âbirdcageâ sets were introduced by the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SE&CR) between 1912 and 1915. The characteristic birdcage lookouts over each of the guards compartments give these sets their name and typify standard SE&CR non-corridor coaching stock. With their distinct character, being of pre-grouping origin, these sets were long lived and little modified during their lifetime, so have a wide applicability to modellers.
Â
The sets comprised  2nd/ 3rd class composite Brake Lavatory (later declassified to Brake Lavatory Third), a 1st / 2nd (later declassified to 1st/ 3rd) Lavatory Composite  and Brake Third. The Composites were built in batches with two distinct body side variations. The initial order had two wide windows on each side for the saloon, and the later examples had one wide and one narrow window for the saloon.
Â
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Bachmann SE&CR 60ft Birdcage Brake Third â Wellington Brown is a 2019 range model in pristine condition. It carries the running number 1170, measures 260âŻmm in length and is rendered in the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SE&CR) 60âfoot birdcage coach style. The model is classified as a BT (Brake Third) and represents a preâgrouping SE&CR thirdâclass carriage.
The coach is finished in the Wellington Brown livery with accurate colourâmatched seating and fully detailed interior partitions, saloon tables and lavatory fittings. External features include correctly radiused flushâglazed windows, birdcage lookouts, roof vents, vacuum pipes, handrails, grab handles and brake control apparatus. The underframe shows fine detailing, four sets of moulded queenâpost truss rodding, turnbuckles, dynamos and battery boxes as fitted to the prototype, and new 8âŻft Heavy Fox coilâspring bolster bogies with metal wheelsets and pinâpoint axles in metal bearings. Detachable couplings sit in NEM pockets with a closeâcoupling mechanism.
Historically, SE&CR introduced sixtyâtwo 60âŻft threeâcoach birdcage sets between 1912 and 1915. The distinctive birdcage lookouts over each guardâs compartment gave the type its name, and the stock remained largely unchanged throughout its service life, making it a popular subject for model railway enthusiasts. The sets comprised a Brake Lavatory Third, a Lavatory Composite (later reâclassed) and a Brake Third, with two bodyâside window configurations produced during the production run.
