Manufacturer description

The British Railways Mk1 was the designation given to BR’s first standard design of main line coaching stock, and one of its most successful. Built from 1951 until the early 1960s to augment and replace the array of ā€˜Big Four’ and earlier ā€˜pre-grouping’ designs inherited from the LMS, LNER, GWR and SR, BR took the best features from several of these types to produce the new steel-bodied design. As a result, the Mk1 was stronger and safer than any of the inherited types that came before it.

Bachmann BR Mk1 TSO Tourist Second Open coach in maroon livery, model number 39-060PF, finished in pristine condition. The coach carries the running number SC4257 and measures 270 mm in length. It is equipped with a NEM coupling and includes passenger figures.

The model represents a British Railways Mark 1 coach of the Tourist Standard Open (TSO) type, dating from the late British Railways crest period. It is an accurate, 00‑scale replica of the steel‑bodied standard carriages introduced by British Railways between 1951 and the early 1960s to replace the earlier pre‑grouping designs. The Mk1 design was notable for its improved strength and safety compared with the inherited locomotive‑stock.
