Manufacturer description

British Railways produced many standard designs for locomotives and rolling stock, amongst which was the CovHop introduced from 1952 to become the standard covered hopper wagon to transport powders such as sand, soda ash and sugar.

The Branchline Covhop boasts a number of interchangeable features allowing individual wagons to be modelled accurately and the wagon depicted here is one with roller bearing axle boxes, OLEO buffers, and disc brakes – these are fitted to one side of the wagon only and necessitate that the wheels on that side are plain disc wheels, as opposed to the 3-hole disc wheels found on the non-braked side. The highly detailed bodyshell is adorned with separate walkways, roof hatches and end bracing, while gravity discharge doors are incorporated into the chassis amongst the running gear.

Bachmann Branchline BR 35T “Covhop” Covered Hopper (model BR Bauxite “British Industrial Sand”) is a OO‑scale replica of the British Rail standard covered hopper wagon introduced in 1952 for the transport of bulk powders such as sand, soda ash and sugar.

The model, part number 38‑502A, represents the British Rail Blue TOPS period. It features interchangeable components to depict a specific variant with roller‑bearing axle boxes, OLEO buffers and disc brakes on one side only; this side uses plain disc wheels, while the opposite side retains the traditional three‑hole disc wheels. The bodyshell includes separate walkways, roof hatches, end bracing and gravity‑discharge doors integrated into the chassis.

It is presented in the pristine BR Bauxite “BIS Sand for Rockware Glass Ltd” livery, carries the running number B870863 and conforms to Era 7 standards. The wagon is equipped with NEM coupling pockets and measures 104 mm over the couplings.
