Prototype Era
Era 7 (1972 to 1982) British Rail Blue (TOPS)
British Railways produced many standard designs for locomotives and rolling stock, amongst which was the CovHop introduced from 1952 to become the standard covered hopper wagon to transport powders such as sand, soda ash and sugar.
The Branchline Covhop boasts a number of interchangeable features allowing individual wagons to be modelled accurately and the wagon depicted here is one with roller bearing axle boxes, OLEO buffers, and disc brakes â these are fitted to one side of the wagon only and necessitate that the wheels on that side are plain disc wheels, as opposed to the 3-hole disc wheels found on the non-braked side. The highly detailed bodyshell is adorned with separate walkways, roof hatches and end bracing, while gravity discharge doors are incorporated into the chassis amongst the running gear.
