Prototype Era
Era 7 (1972 to 1982) British Rail Blue (TOPS)
British Railways produced many standard designs for locomotives and rolling stock, amongst which was the CovHop introduced from 1952 to become the standard covered hopper wagon to transport powders such as sand, soda ash and sugar.
The Branchline Covhop boasts a number of interchangeable features allowing individual wagons to be modelled accurately and the wagon depicted here is one with roller bearing axle boxes, OLEO buffers, and disc brakes – these are fitted to one side of the wagon only and necessitate that the wheels on that side are plain disc wheels, as opposed to the 3-hole disc wheels found on the non-braked side. The highly detailed bodyshell is adorned with separate walkways, roof hatches and end bracing, while gravity discharge doors are incorporated into the chassis amongst the running gear.

Bachmann Branchline offers a 00 scale model of the British Rail BR 35T “Covhop” covered hopper wagon, reference number 38‑500B. The original CovHop design was introduced in 1952 and became the standard wagon for transporting bulk powders such as sand, soda ash and sugar. This particular representation shows the version fitted with roller‑bearing axle boxes, OLEO buffers and disc brakes on one side only, the opposite side having plain three‑hole disc wheels.
The model is supplied in the pristine BR Bauxite (TOPS) livery and carries the running number B870780. The bodyshell includes detailed walkways, roof hatches, end bracing and gravity‑discharge doors that are integrated with the chassis and running gear. NEM coupling pockets are provided, and the overall length over the couplings measures 104 mm.
The kit is part of the Era 7 range and is intended for use with standard OO gauge track and accessories. It is a ready‑to‑assemble version aimed at collectors who wish to recreate the appearance of a mid‑century British Rail hopper wagon.
