Prototype Era
Era 7 (1972 to 1982) British Rail Blue (TOPS)
Coal fuelled Britain during the twentieth century and much of this fuel was transported by rail. The 16 Ton Steel Mineral Wagon began as a wartime design, but following Nationalisation hundreds of thousands of these humble four-wheel wagons would be ordered by BR to move coal around the UK, replacing the wooden-bodied wagons that had been inherited from the ‘Big Four’ railway companies and private owners.
Each of the three Bachmann Branchline models in the pack depict wagons with a fabricated end door and side doors which have top flaps – this aided manual unloading in coal yards. Each wagon sports double sided brakes and as they are fitted wagons, vacuum cylinders are also present; wheels are of the 3-hole disc variety and are of metal construction. The unmistakable look of the 16T Mineral Wagon is expertly replicated, with this Branchline model boasting separately fitted metal door stops, brake gear, linkage and hand brake levers, along with metal buffer heads and cosmetic coupling hooks. Authentic colours and typefaces are employed during the livery application prototype, completing this high-fidelity model.
