Prototype Era
Era 5 (1956 to 1966) British Railways Late Crest
As part of our Winter 2022 British Railway Announcements, we are pleased to present this LNER Thompson Brake Composite Corridor Coach, No. E1193E in BR Maroon livery.
Entering traffic just after World War Two, the Thompson coaches were the last mainline corridor coaches to be built by the LNER, and indeed examples continued to be outshopped after Nationalisation in 1948. Utilising steel panelling, a departure from the teak panelling traditionally seen on coaches built by the LNER and its predecessors, the Thompson coaches were sleek and modern in appearance. Whilst much of the fleet would remain in service until the final days of steam, many of their hallmarks would also be seen in their successors, the British Railway Mark 1 Standard Coaching Stock.
The Bachmann Branchline models of the LNER Thompson Coaches entered traffic to critical acclaim only a few years ago, and these stunning models are now offered in BR Maroon livery for the first time. Essential for any BR Eastern Region modeller, every coach is a faithful replica of the prototype, with features like separately fitted roof vents and metal handrails on the roof, whilst underneath the vacuum and steam heat pipework is present along with battery boxes, dynamo and brake equipment all fitted between the truss rod frames. The bogies incorporate electrical pickups, brake details and footsteps as appropriate, whilst authentic interiors are also included and decorated accordingly, adding to the expertly finished exterior which uses authentic colours, logos and fonts to every model an exquisite appearance.

The Bachmann Branchline LNER Thompson Brake Composite Corridor Coach, No. E1193E, is a new addition to the manufacturer's range. This model represents a coach from the British Railways era, specifically in the Late Crest period.
The Thompson coaches were built by the London and North Eastern Railway after World War Two and continued to be produced after nationalisation in 1948. They featured steel panelling, a departure from the traditional teak panelling of earlier coaches. The coaches were designed to be sleek and modern in appearance, and their design influenced the later British Railways Mark 1 Standard Coaching Stock.
The Bachmann Branchline model of the LNER Thompson Coach has been well-received by modellers in the past, and this new release in BR Maroon livery is a welcome addition. The model features separately fitted roof vents and metal handrails, as well as vacuum and steam heat pipework, battery boxes, dynamo and brake equipment. The bogies incorporate electrical pickups, brake details and footsteps, while the interior is decorated to match the exterior's authentic colours, logos and fonts.
The model is designed for OO gauge modellers and is suitable for the Era 5 period. It comes with a range of features, including accessory packs, NEM coupling pockets and a close coupling mechanism. The model measures 264mm in length and is finished in pristine BR Maroon livery.
