Manufacturer description

The 35 Ton Grain Hopper Wagons, sometimes known as Whisky Covhops (COVered HOPpers), were built in the late-1960s for the transportation of grain from growing regions like East Anglia and South East England to the whisky distilleries of Scotland. The 4 wheel hopper wagons provided an increased payload over the types they replaced and were operated by Associated British Maltsters Ltd. And Scottish Malt Distillers. At first bold and colourful advertising boards were carried on the sides of wagons, but these were soon removed leaving just the brown livery, although some were later painted into the more eye catching ‘Grainflow’ scheme of green and grey. In later years some wagons were used on Alumina traffic in Scotland but all had been withdrawn before the end of the twentieth century.
