MODEL FEATURES:
STANDARD CLASS 9F HISTORY
The British Railways BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 was introduced from 1954, with a total of 251 built at BRâs Swindon Works (53) and Crewe Works (198). Designed by Robert Riddles, the 9F is just one of Riddlesâ BR Standard designs, with different Classes designed for specific duties with the vision that such standardisation would bring improved efficiencies to BR operations. The Class was designed primarily to haul fast, heavy freight trains, but the 9Fs also found favour on passenger turns, in particular summer holiday specials when their lack of steam heating capabilities did not present a problem.
Impressive in both size and performance, the 9Fsâ lives were cut shockingly short with No. 92220 âEvening Starâ â the 999th BR Standard to be built and the final steam locomotive outshopped by British Railways â entering traffic in 1960, only 4 years before the first examples were withdrawn. âEvening Starâ itself did not fare much better and was withdrawn in March 1965 after just 60 months in traffic â thankfully the locomotive was saved for the National Collection.
Despite the early withdrawals, some 9Fs continued in traffic until the final months of steam on British Rail and the last was withdrawn in June 1968. In addition to âEvening Starâ, eight further 9Fs were purchased by the preservation movement, mainly from the Woodham Brothers Scrapyard in Barry, but so far only six have been returned to serviceable condition in the preservation era.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Bachmann Branchline OOâscale model of a British Railways Standard Class 9F locomotive coupled to a BR1F tender, supplied as item 92069 (manufacturer part number 32â852A). The model is finished in a weathered BR black livery with the early emblem and bears the running number 92069.
The locomotive measures 275âŻmm in length, has a 2â10â0 wheel arrangement and is DCCâready with an 8âpin socket (Plux22 decoder socket, recommended decoder item 36â570). The minimum curve radius is 438âŻmm (second radius). It includes sprung buffers and NEM coupling pockets.
Modelling features comprise a removable coal load with coal space modelled underneath, an adjustable tender drawbar with two settings, a single chimney, and an accessory pack. The tender and locomotive are modelled to a weathered condition representative of the early British Railways crest period.
The prototype BR Standard Class 9F was built between 1954 and 1960, with 251 examples produced at Swindon and Crewe works. Designed by Robert Riddles, the 2â10â0 locomotive was intended for fast, heavy freight but also saw use on passenger specials. The class was withdrawn from service by June 1968; the final example, NoâŻ92220 âEvening Starâ, entered traffic in 1960 and was withdrawn on 4 March 1965, later being preserved for the National Collection. Six of the eight locomotives rescued from the Woodham Brothers scrapyard have returned to operational condition in preservation.
