Highlights
History
The British Rail Class 411 (or 4-CEP) electric multiple units were built at Eastleigh works from 1956–63 for the newly electrified main lines in Kent. These units were constructed using a standard Mk1 design and based on the general philosophy of the Southern Railway’s main line 4 -COR design of 1937. Variants of the class 411 design included the class 410 and class 412 4 BEP units, which contained a buffet car in place of a standard trailer. They were later used on services in Sussex and Hampshire. Following the privatisation of British Rail in 1995, the units were used on Connex South Central, Connex South Eastern and South West Trains franchises. They were ultimately replaced by Juniper and Electrostar units during the industry’s drive to eliminate ‘slam-door’ rolling stock for reasons of safety and modernisation. The fleet's lifespan was 49 years; these units are the longest-lived BR Mark 1 EMUs.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Bachmann’s Class 411 “4‑CEP” 4‑car electric multiple unit (EMU) model (number 7106) reproduces a British Rail unit from the 1956‑1963 production run. The model is part of the 2019 range, finished in a weathered blue and grey livery, and carries the British Rail Blue (TOPS) period marking. It measures 1 070 mm in length, fits a minimum curve radius of 438 mm (second radius), and includes both directional and interior lighting. The kit is DCC ready with a 21‑pin socket.
The real‑world Class 411 units were built at Eastleigh works, using a standard Mk 1 design derived from the Southern Railway 4‑COR of 1937. A total of 135 units were produced for the newly electrified main lines in Kent, later operating in Sussex and Hampshire and, after privatisation, on Connex South Central, Connex South Eastern and South West Trains franchises. They remained in service for 49 years before being replaced by newer Juniper and Electrostar stock as part of the move away from “slam‑door” rolling stock.
