Accurascale has released a new range of OO gauge clayhood wagons, featuring the UCV variant in BR Blue livery. These models are representative of the period before the TOPS system was introduced.

The Accurascale clay hood is designed to replicate the various modifications made to these wagons throughout their lifespan, from their initial construction to their eventual withdrawal. The model features a diecast underframe and axles with brass bearings, providing smooth running performance.

Each wagon is highly detailed, with etched metal, plastic, and wire parts, including handrails, grab handles, and brake gear. The model also features two types of buffers, NEM standard coupler pockets, and narrow tension lock couplers. The accessories bag includes instanter couplings.

The model is constructed from plastic and die-cast metal, with a weight of 42g per wagon. The wheels are RP25.110 chemically blackened OO gauge, and the bearings are blackened brass, conforming to Accurascale's standard of 14.4mm back-to-back on 2mm axles over 26mm pinpoints.

The Accurascale clayhood wagons were built between 1954 and 1960, with a total of 875 wagons produced. They were designed to carry China clay, which was transported from Cornwall and South Devon to yards on the main line for transhipment to boats or for full trainloads to the potteries or further afield. The wagons were also used to transport ball clay, a wet, lumpy product that was transported in a different manner to China clay.

The wagons underwent several modifications over the years, including the addition of vacuum brake equipment, the introduction of a new classification system, and changes to the axle box styles and buffers. The most notable change was the introduction of the "pent" hood, which was designed to prevent rainwater from pooling around the load.

The UCV wagons were eventually reclassified as OOV in 1983, and the fleet was withdrawn in 1988. However, several examples have survived into preservation, with some being restored to working condition and others being displayed in museums and as memorials to the China clay industry.
