Accurascale's Clayhood - 13T - Fitted - Triple Pack D model is a highly detailed representation of a British Railways 13-ton clay wagon, specifically designed to reproduce the vehicles from their introduction in 1954 to their withdrawal in 1988. The model features a removable hood that shows a detailed interior and tarpaulin bar, as well as a diecast underframe and axles running in brass bearings for smooth operation.
The model is constructed from plastic and die-cast metal, with a weight of 42g per wagon. It features RP25.110 chemically blackened OO gauge wheel sets, blackened brass bearings, and etched metal, plastic, and wire detail parts. The model also includes turned sprung metal buffers and two buffer types, as well as NEM standard coupler pockets and narrow tension lock couplers.
The clay wagons were built by British Railways to transport China clay and ball clay, with the first 300 wagons built without vacuum fittings and independently braked. Later, they were modified with vacuum brake equipment and repainted into the BR Bauxite livery. The wagons underwent several changes over the years, including the introduction of TOPS and the modification of the hoods to prevent water from pooling around the load.
The Accurascale model is available in a triple pack D livery, representing the Freight Bauxite scheme used during the British Railways Late Crest period. The model is highly detailed and features individual lettering and codes from real wagons for authenticity. An accessory bag is included, containing instanter couplings.
The clay wagons played a crucial role in the transportation of China clay and ball clay in Cornwall and South Devon, and many of these wagons have been preserved and are now on display in museums or operating on heritage railways.
