Accurascale has released a new triple pack of 13T unfitted clay hood wagons in BR Freight Grey livery, representing the early crest period of British Railways. These wagons are highly detailed and feature a diecast underframe and axles running in brass bearings for smooth running.
The model features a removable sheet/hood, showing a fully detailed interior and tarpaulin bar, as well as correctly oriented longitudinal floor planks. The wagons also feature turned sprung metal buffers and NEM standard coupler pockets.
The Accurascale clay hood model is able to reproduce the wagons from various stages of their life, including the original "disc" type hoods and the later "pent" hood modifications. The tooling suite allows for different axle box, buffer, and hood configurations to be modelled.
The 13T clay hood wagons were built by BR between 1954 and 1960, with a total of 875 wagons produced. They were designed to transport China clay and ball clay, with tarpaulin sheets added to keep the cargo dry. The wagons were initially unfitted but later converted to vacuum brake equipment and were repainted in BR Bauxite livery.
Over time, the wagons underwent several modifications, including the introduction of a "pent" hood to prevent rainwater from pooling in the wagon. The wagons were also recoded from UCV to OOV in 1983 and eventually withdrawn in 1988, replaced by air-braked CDA wagons.
Several of the iconic clay hood wagons have been preserved and are now on display at various railway museums and heritage railways, including the Bodmin and Wenford Railway.
