The Newcomen Steam Festival is an annual event held in a number of venues around the town of Dartmouth in South Devon. It celebrates the invention of Thomas Newcomen, born in Dartmouth, who invented the atmospheric steam engine: literally the engine that changed the world. The Festival will have railway-related stands and events including model layouts, models, GWR, Network Rail, Dartmouth Steam Railway, South Devon Railway model shop, Plym Valley Railway, Lynton and Barnstable Railway, and Heathfield Rail. The museum will offer steam-related history including the invention and development of steam engines and will be displaying the famous Hulse models. In Royal Avenue Gardens there will be miniature steam traction models, a sit-on railway, and information boards describing Dartmouth's rich steam heritage. Over in Kingswear will be the visit of the LNER Class A4 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley hauling a steam excursion trip from Southend and on the Dartmouth side the railway station that has never seen a train. On the River Dart will be trips aboard the paddle steamer Kingswear Castle. Specifically for children will be the children's play room in the Guildhall, the sit-on railway in Royal Avenue Gardens, story-telling and activities in Dartmouth Library and linking all the locations and events will be a steam heritage trail around the town. The day will be a festival of steam with events and activities for all ages. Limited light refreshments will be available but visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the many cafes, restaurants, shops and take-aways offering food and drink of all varieties. Parking in town is limited with maximum two hours roadside and four hours in the main car park but there will be a Park & Ride bus service from the car park at the top of town opposite the Leisure Centre. All venues are wheelchair accessible, but due to the considerable age of the building, the museum is unfortunately step access only. Limited disabled parking is available in town, but blue badges can be used for short-term parking. Local bus services operate from Totnes railway station, Kingsbridge, Plymouth, and Torbay via the River Dart ferries.
