A realistic backscene literally helps to set the scene of a model railway. When carefully considered and applied a good backscene is almost unnoticeable, acting as a foil for the the main attraction of the railway itself. But a poorly applied backscene will have the opposite effect, drawing attention away from the railway and ruining the experience of viewing a layout.
