HISTORY
Clayton has supplied variations of its CBD80/90 hybrid battery-diesel loco to a number of industrial users with an initial build of 5 for Tata Steel, 2 for Sellafield and 15 for Beacon Rail with more expected in the future. Clayton and Beacon hope that the Class 18 will begin to replace elderly Class 08s as the modern yard shunter of choice.
The 15 Beacon locos have been assigned to Class 18 on the rail network and are expected to be hired out to freight operators in a number of industrial and yard locations. 18001 is currently on test at the Chasewater Railway with Clayton delivering further Class 18s from now until mid-2023.
Revolution have an exclusive licence from Beacon to use their logo and branding on the Class 18s, plus an agreement from Tata Steel.

The model carries the manufacturer part number RT‑CL18‑BE‑006, is listed under DCC status DCC 21, and includes interior lighting.
The locomotive is a 5‑axle hybrid battery‑diesel shunter originally supplied by Clayton Engineering to industrial users, with five units built for Tata Steel, two for Sellafield and fifteen for Beacon Rail. The fifteen Beacon‑rail locomotives have been classified as Class 18 on the rail network and are intended for hire to freight operators in industrial and yard settings. Unit 18001 is undergoing testing on the Chasewater Railway, with further deliveries scheduled up to mid‑2023.
Model features include an injection‑moulded plastic body and bogies, a heavy cast metal chassis/footplate block, and power pick‑up on all wheels. The chassis houses a smooth 5‑pole 12 V DC motor with metal gearboxes and brass‑axle bearings. A high‑quality PCB provides a 21‑pin DCC interface with Stay‑Alive and Anti‑Flicker functions. Lighting comprises forward cab and buffer‑beam white headlights, red tail lights and, where required, solid or flashing warning lights; all lights are LED‑based, switchable and controllable via DCC, with a painted cab interior and switchable interior lighting. The model is built with photo‑etched grilles, wire‑or‑plastic handrails, piping and windscreen wipers, and features softly sprung buffers.
Couplers are fitted in NEM 362 sockets with a kinematic close‑coupling system, supplied with functional tension‑lock couplers at both ends. An accessory pack provides a painted full buffing plate with realistic cosmetic coupler hook and shackle for optional fitting. A DCC sound project for the locomotive has been recorded by Legomanbiffo.
The model is available to pre‑order exclusively from Rails, under the “Rails of Sheffield” limited‑edition series.
