VOL01FR Volvo FH Fridge - H E Payne H E Payne (Transport) Ltd found its roots back in 1938 when Harry Edward Payne began work as a coal merchant with a Morris Commercial 30 cwt truck, working out of Tempsford railway station in Bedfordshire. He capitalised on a local lack of transportation during WWII by providing a service to farmers, getting their produce to market. Sadly Harry was killed in a tragic shooting accident in 1948, with his wife caretaking the business until his son David was old enough to join the team.
The company, still headed up by David , together with his son Richard - has run a variety of haulage vehicles over the year but now over 75% of their business lies in the transport of refrigerated goods. Volvo FH fridge vehicles form a large part of the fleet, operating from their 5-acre site at Wyboston, Bedfordshire, next to the house where Harry Payne started the business nearly 70 years ago. Today they offer over 120,000 sq feet of warehousing space located in three strategic locations along the A1 corridor.
