Oxford's 1:76 expansive series of small commercial vehicles sees the addition of the Mercedes Sprinter. We see it for the first time as used by Stobart Air at London Southend Airport. The London Southend Airport Company, a subsidiary of the Stobart Group, has leased the airport from the local council since 1994. Our van is decorated in a clear white colour scheme with bright blue Stobart Air graphics, including a chequered skirt and is registered GF12 MVZ from 2012. Additional trim is finished in either black or silver and the interior is moulded in black too.
Our van represents the second generation Sprinter, which was upgraded in 2006, the original having been launched as far back as 1995. It was voted Van of the Year in 2007 and is still at the forefront of the small commercial scene today, albeit with further upgrades along the way. Our second generation vehicle proved its versatility with variants including the standard 4-door cargo van as depicted by our model, 2-door pick-up and 4 -door minibus. According to its use, its wheelbase varied from short to extra long and a choice of transmission was also available, either a 6-speed manual gearbox or the option of a 5-speed or 7-speed automatic. Its attributes have made it a favourite throughout the commercial sector, so there is plenty of scope for an exciting 1:76 scale Oxford series to come.
