Manufacturer description

Austin has been synonymous with taxis since the end of the 1920's, when dealers Mann and Overton sponsored a new Austin cab for London. This LL or Low Loader first appeared in 1934 and became an instant success, due mainly to a very attractive price, as well as being very reliable. With a serious shortage of suitable towing vehicles at the outbreak of the war in 1939, arrangements were made to convert 2,000 taxi cabs. The Austin Low Loader was ideal for this purpose being robust with a tight turning circle able to carry crew and equipment. It could also carry hoses. Even during these times many still had their "For Hire" meters in place, even whilst carrying the AFS markings.

Oxford Diecast AFS LCC Austin Taxi is a 1:76 scale model (part number 76AT003) representing a British Railways early‑crest Austin Low Loader taxi. The model depicts the vehicle that entered service in 1934 and became a common London cab, noted for its low price and reliability.

During the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, 2,000 of these taxis were converted for use by the Auxiliary Fire Service; the robust design, tight turning circle and ability to carry hoses made the Low Loader suitable for transporting crew and equipment. The model includes details such as the “For Hire” meter and AFS markings as they appeared at the time.
