These barrels, also known as drums, were brought into use to aid the transport of oil and bulk liquid cargo. The shape of these drums allowed them to stack together to make transportation easier, and this allows them to take up less floor space during this time. The terms barrel and drum are used almost interchangeably, the terms usually refer to the size and capacity of the containers.
