Manufacturer description

On nationalisation, the newly formed BR inherited a vast assortment of rolling stock designed to carry coal. As Britain rebuilt itself after WWII, the demand for coal soared and it was decided that a standard coal carrying vehicle was required to improve efficiency. The new standard was based on the 1930’s LNER design and was of an all steel construction. Over 23,000 of these new standard wagons were built between 1949 and 1958 and continued into service into the early 1980’s Due to the heavy wear and tear these wagons were subject to, many were modified and rebuilt.

Dapol 21T Hopper BR (product reference E289506) is an OO gauge model of a British Railways early‑crest coal wagon. The manufacturer part number is 4F-034-027 and the model represents the period of British Railways after nationalisation, specifically the standard 21‑ton hopper introduced in the late 1940s.

Following the nationalisation of the rail network, British Railways required a uniform coal‑carrying wagon to meet the post‑war increase in coal demand. The design was based on a 1930s LNER prototype and was constructed entirely of steel. More than 23,000 of these wagons were built between 1949 and 1958 and remained in operational use into the early 1980s, with many units later modified or rebuilt due to heavy wear.

The Dapol model replicates the hopper with a finely moulded body and accurately applied livery and printed details. It is supplied complete with a load, features profiled wheels, NEM pockets and self‑centring couplings.

This model is intended for collectors and railway enthusiasts seeking a detailed representation of the BR 21‑ton coal hopper in OO gauge.
