Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)
Ventilated vans were the primary way of transporting perishable goods quickly and efficiently and yet maintaining their contents in peak condition. All four of the pre-nationalised rail companies had their own particular designs but each shared the same basic principles of having a wooden body with ventilators, which allowed a constant - ow and circulation of fresh air around their cargo. Dapol have modelled the GWR and LMS ventilated vans, the LMS version had a steel corrugated end, whilst the GWR was traditionally planked. Ventilated vans from all four companies survived into nationalisation until BR eventually standardised its own version and these were in use until the 1960s at which time longer vans with wider door ways to allow pallet access were introduced. Many ventilated vans from all companies survive into preservation. Dapol Ventilated Van LMS Bauxite 155020 is supplied in a weathered finish and carries the manufacturer part number 4F-011-030. The model represents a ventilated van from the LMS during the period of the pre‑nationalisation "Big Four" railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).
Ventilated vans were used to transport perishable goods, relying on a wooden body with ventilators to provide continuous airflow and keep cargo in optimal condition. The LMS version featured a steel corrugated end, whereas the GWR design used traditional planking. All four companies continued to operate such vans after nationalisation until British Rail introduced a standardised type, which remained in service until the 1960s when longer vans with wider doors for pallet access appeared.
The Dapol model includes highly detailed body moulding, accurately applied livery, profiled wheels and NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings. It is intended for collectors and railway enthusiasts and is compatible with standard model railway layouts.
