Manufacturer description

The first diesel railcar was introduced by the GWR in 1933. The innovation was to prove extremely successful and they continued in operation well into the 1960s when their use was eclipsed by the introduction of the BR first generation DMUs. The railcar’s art deco air smoothed styling has lead to their nickname of `Flying Banana’ although later variants were produced to a more angular style. In all 38 GWR diesel railcars were produced from 1933 to 1942 at three different sites with three surviving into preservation.

Dapol Streamlined Railcar BR Lined Carmine/Cream No W8 is a OO gauge model fitted with DCC sound. It carries the manufacturer part number 4D-011-008S and represents the British Railways early crest period.

The original diesel railcar was introduced by the Great Western Railway in 1933 and remained in service into the 1960s. A total of 38 GWR diesel railcars were built between 1933 and 1942; three examples survive in preservation. Their art‑deco, air‑smoothed styling earned them the nickname “Flying Banana”, although later versions adopted a more angular form.

The model includes a finely moulded body with separately applied details such as etched grills, directional and interior lighting, and accurately printed logos and numbering. It features sprung buffers, cast wheels with fine relief and appropriate colour, a tungsten chassis, all‑wheel pickup, a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor for smooth running, and an accessory bag containing extra detail parts and spares. The new variant adds a revised body shell, updated glazing and a detailed interior parcel shelving.

Key specifications: Class AEC Railcar, livery BR Carmine/Cream, Era 3 (1923‑1947), Bo‑Bo wheel configuration, DCC sound fitted, 2‑rail sound track supply and a pristine finish. Measurements are 250 mm length over buffers, 34 mm width and 49 mm height.
