Manufacturer description

Announced in November 2022 to coincide with Bachmann Europe’s Winter 2022 British Railway Announcements, we are delighted to present this Limited Edition model of the Bachmann Branchline OO Scale SE&CR 25 Ton ‘Dance Hall’ Brake Van finished as BR Crane Mess Van No. DS55466.

Known as the ‘Dance Halls’ owing to the spacious cabin provided for the Guard, these 25 Ton Brake Vans were built by the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SE&CR) and later the Southern Railway (SR). Lasting in service well past Nationalisation, several were granted a second life in departmental use following withdrawal from revenue earning traffic by BR. No. DS55466 is one such example and was the final ‘Dance Hall’ of its type to remain in use on the network, being used as a Crane Mess Van for the Stratford Crane until the late-1980s before being saved for preservation.

With a high specification including a chassis that features full depth solebars with brake and spring detail on the underside, the interior is not overlooked either and inside you will find the Guard’s stove, seating and desk – all visible through the glazed windows at each end of the vehicle. Separate wire handrails are fitted along with lamp brackets, metal buffers and the distinctive foot boards which stretch the length of the vehicle.
