Prototype Era
Era 2 (1875 to 1923) Pre-grouping
We are excited to present the new Bachmann Branchline model of the SE&CR 25 Ton ‘Dance Hall’ Brake Van, finished in SE&CR Grey livery, as part of our Autumn 2022 British Railway Announcements.
Not previously available in OO scale, this Branchline models depicts the South Eastern and Chatham Railway’s (SE&CR) 25 Ton Goods Brake which became known as the ‘Dance Halls’ owing to the spacious cabin provided for the Guard. Designed and built by the SE&CR, the Southern Railway (SR) built further examples after Grouping before designing their own version – the 25 Ton ‘Pill Box’ Brake Van (models of which are also produced by Bachmann Branchline) – which afforded a Guard much less covered accommodation. Whilst the final example was built during the 1920s, the Dance Halls were long lived with some surviving through to the late-twentieth century having been granted a second life inn departmental use.
With a high specification including a chassis that features full depth solebars with brake and spring detail on the underside, the interior is not overlooked either and inside you will find the Guard’s stove, seating and desk – all visible through the glazed windows at each end of the vehicle. Separate wire handrails are fitted along with lamp brackets, metal buffers and the distinctive foot boards which stretch the length of the vehicle.

Bachmann has released a new model of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway's 25 Ton 'Dance Hall' Brake Van in OO scale. This model represents the vehicle in SE&CR Grey livery and is part of the Branchline range.
The SE&CR 25 Ton Goods Brake Van, also known as the 'Dance Hall', was a type of wagon designed and built by the South Eastern and Chatham Railway. It became known by this name due to the spacious cabin provided for the Guard. The Southern Railway later built similar wagons, but with less accommodation for the Guard, known as the 25 Ton 'Pill Box' Brake Van.
The Bachmann Branchline model features a high level of detail, including a chassis with full depth solebars, brake and spring detail on the underside, and a well-appointed interior visible through the glazed windows. The model includes separate wire handrails, lamp brackets, metal buffers, and distinctive footboards.
The model is finished in pristine SE&CR Grey livery and is numbered 11902. It is part of the Branchline range and is Era 2 compliant. The model measures 109mm in length and features NEM Coupling Pockets.
