Pack O: The Harton Coal Company - With two sets of Staiths on the River Tyne, the area around South Shields was the centre of the Harton Coal Companyâs operations, its pits being linked by an extensive railway system. Two P1 style Chaldrons and an S&DR style Chaldron, circa 1910, numbered:
Each pack produced has been themed by colliery, and each waggon depicted is based on photographic evidence and reference to colliery records to confirm lettering styles. Accurascale Pack of 3 â Chaldron Wagon Harton Colliery (Part number ACC2814âO) is a threeâwagon multiâpack representing the North Eastern Railway 4âtonne chaldron used by the Harton Coal Company before the railway grouping era. The pack depicts two P1âstyle chaldrons and one S&DRâstyle chaldron, circa 1910, numbered 502, 372 and 288, and is based on photographic evidence and colliery records to ensure accurate lettering and livery.
Each wagon has a dieâcast metal chassis with a plastic body and weighs about 9âŻg when unloaded. They run on a minimum radius of 371âŻmm (first radius setâtrack) and incorporate five body designs covering the period 1840â1978. Wheel types include splitâspoke, starâspoke and waveâspoke to a blackened 00âgauge RP25â88 profile. Braking arrangements vary, offering three styles of brake handles and block types, including the more complex Londonderry clasp brake. Additional features are removable âgreedy boardsâ for increased coal loading, scaleâwidth wire handrails, metal pinâjaw couplings, wire/etch handâbrake levers, and eroded metal/plastic detail parts such as grab handles and safety chains.
The wagons are coupled with a new fine chain fitted with neodymium magnetic heads and prototypical cotterâpin couplings; two extra NEMâtype magnetic couplings are supplied for attaching to locomotives or other rolling stock. Artwork shows authentic colliery markings and numbers, verified by research assistance from Beamish Living Museum, Bowes Railway and the North Eastern Railway Association.
