Manufacturer description

Three wagon multi-pack, NER 4T Chaldron

Pack N: The Throckley Coal Company
 - Formed in 1867, the Throckley Coal Company owned a number of pits to the west of Newcastle, on the north bank of the River Tyne, and were linked to Staiths situated at Leamington by two separate railway branches. Throckley’s fleet of Chaldrons were in use right up to 1947, when they were scrapped by burning, and the company was one of the few that fitted their ex-NER P1 Chaldrons with additional ‘greedy boards’.

Three P1 style Chaldrons, two fitted with additional ‘Greedy Boards’, circa 1946, numbered:

Each pack produced has been themed by colliery, and each waggon depicted is based on photographic evidence and reference to colliery records to confirm lettering styles. Some packs contain just one style of waggon, while others contain mixed styles where research has shown that they operated in conjunction with each other.

Accurascale Pack of 3 – Chaldron Wagon – Throckley Colliery
Manufacturer Part Number: ACC2813‑N

This three‑wagon multi‑pack reproduces North Eastern Railway 4‑ton Chaldron wagons as they appeared in the era of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR). The wagons are modelled after the Throckley Coal Company fleet, which was founded in 1867 and operated pits to the west of Newcastle on the north bank of the River Tyne. The company kept its Chaldrons in service until 1947, when they were scrapped by burning, and it was one of the few that added “greedy boards” to its ex‑NER P1 Chaldrons to increase coal capacity.

The pack contains three P1‑style Chaldrons dated to circa 1946, marked 133, 104 and 108. Two of the wagons are fitted with the additional “greedy boards”. All liveries and lettering are based on photographic evidence and colliery records, with some packs presenting a single wagon style and others a mixed group where historical research shows they operated together.

Specification highlights: die‑cast metal chassis with a plastic body, weighing 9 g unloaded; capable of navigating minimum radius curves of 371 mm (first radius set‑track). Five body designs covering 1840‑1978, three wheel‑spoke patterns (split, star and wave) to a blackened 00‑gauge RP25‑88 profile, and three braking arrangements including the more complex Londonderry clasp type. The wagons feature removable greedy boards, scale‑width wire handrails, metal pin‑jaw couplings, wire/etch handbrake levers and eroded metal/plastic detail parts such as grab handles and safety chains. Coupling is provided by a fine‑link chain with neodymium magnetic heads and prototypical cotter‑pin couplings, with two extra NEM‑fitted magnetic couplings supplied for use with locomotives or additional rolling stock.

Artwork displays authentic colliery markings and numbers, verified against period photographs where possible. Research assistance was provided by Beamish Living Museum, Bowes Railway and the North Eastern Railway Association.
